Understanding the cost of therapy should be as straightforward as possible.

Through the Fire Counseling works with insurance and private-pay clients. In addition, we reserve a limited number of reduced-fee appointments for clients who qualify.

Because insurance benefits vary by plan, we encourage clients to verify coverage before beginning treatment.

Through the Fire Counseling participates in-network with several insurance plans and networks.

Current insurance participation includes:

  • BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee
  • BlueCare
  • BlueCare Plus
  • TennCare Select
  • Behavioral Health Complete and applicable BCBS commercial networks
  • Oscar Health
  • Tennessee Exchange plans, when applicable
  • UnitedHealthcare / Optum behavioral health plans, when applicable
  • Cigna
  • Aetna
  • Wellpoint
  • TRICARE East

However, network participation can vary by the specific insurance product or plan. As a result, having insurance through one of these companies does not automatically guarantee that every plan or service is covered.

Every insurance plan is different. Therefore, we recommend contacting your insurance company before your first appointment to ask about your outpatient behavioral health benefits.

Helpful questions include:

  • Is Through the Fire Counseling or David Cunningham, LPC-MHSP, in-network with my specific plan?
  • Do I have a deductible for outpatient mental health services?
  • What is my copay or coinsurance for psychotherapy?
  • Has my deductible been met?
  • Do I need a referral or prior authorization?
  • Does my plan cover telehealth therapy?
  • Does my plan limit the number of therapy sessions each year?

Your insurance company can provide the most accurate information about your individual benefits.

However, a quote of benefits does not guarantee that your insurance company will pay a claim. Ultimately, clients are responsible for charges their insurance plan does not cover.

Private pay may be an option if you do not have insurance, prefer not to use insurance, or have a plan that does not cover services at Through the Fire Counseling.

Current private-pay rates are:

ServiceSession LengthRate
Individual Therapy53 minutes$150
Couples Therapy53 minutes$165

We provide rates upfront so you can make an informed decision before beginning treatment.

Insurance coverage for couples or relationship therapy varies by plan.

For example, some plans may cover treatment when therapy addresses a covered mental health condition and meets medical-necessity requirements. In contrast, other plans may not cover services that primarily focus on relationship concerns.

Therefore, couples who plan to use insurance should verify their benefits before beginning treatment.

Through the Fire Counseling reserves a limited number of reduced-fee appointments for clients who qualify.

We consider annual household income and household size when determining sliding-scale rates. However, reduced-fee availability also depends on current caseload capacity.

Annual Household IncomeIndividual Therapy — 53 minCouples Therapy — 53 min
Under $30,000$65$85
$30,001–$45,000$75$95
$45,001–$60,000$85$105
$60,001–$75,000$100$120
Above $75,000$140$165

Please note: Household size may affect the final reduced-fee rate. Therefore, we may adjust rates within the established sliding-scale structure based on individual financial circumstances.

Because we reserve only a limited number of reduced-fee appointments, availability cannot be guaranteed.

You do not have to use insurance simply because Through the Fire Counseling participates with your plan.

For example, some clients choose private pay for personal reasons. Others prefer to use their insurance benefits to reduce out-of-pocket costs.

We can provide information about our rates and network participation. However, your insurance company remains the best source for details about deductibles, copays, coinsurance, authorization requirements, and covered services.

Ultimately, you can choose the payment option that best fits your circumstances and available benefits.

Insurance terminology can be confusing. Therefore, it is reasonable to have questions before scheduling.

If you would like to ask about current network participation, private-pay rates, sliding-scale availability, or the next steps for beginning therapy, please contact Through the Fire Counseling.

We are happy to provide information about our practice so you can make an informed decision about your care.
